Peers say Dementieva was great on court, but even better off of it

All you need to know about the character of Elena Dementieva you could tell from two things that happened this weekend:

1. When she announced her retirement, almost every player at the WTA Championships came on the court to support her. (And many of them did so with tears in their eyes.)

2. Many of those players, as well as others who weren't in Qatar, posted messages about Dementieva on Twitter. There was a common theme in them all: Dementieva was as good a person as she was a tennis player:

(Kidding. Serena didn't Tweet about Elena. She instead blogged a touching note about the retirement.)

Winning a Grand Slam is nice. But retiring with the respect, love and admiration of peers and fans across the world is a pretty nice consolation prize.

The idea for this post was inspired by a similar one at the excellent tennis blog, Forty Deuce
