Boxing fans in the U.K. are being treated to a golden age of elite fighters. Ricky Hatton was in several mega-fights. So was Joe Calzaghe. Now the spotlight is shining on David Haye and Carl Froch, but with that attention comes the pressure of putting on entertaining fights. If your opponent stinks, that's hard to deliver.
Two weeks ago, Haye fought fellow Brit Audley Harrison and left quite a few fans a peeved. The former cruiserweight won via third round TKO (8:31 mark), but Harrison landed just one punch the entire fight.
The British boxing board is still looking at taking away some of Harrison's $2 million purse.
Froch (pictured in the black trunks) is coming off a Fight of the Year candidate against Mikkel Kessler, but still feels like he needs to sooth fight fans and put on a show this Saturday against Arthur Abraham.
"[...] I reckon I can do boxing a favour. My fights are always exciting. And this one will be no exception. It will restore the public's faith in the sport," said Froch.
The former WBC 168-pound champ wasn't ripping Haye. In fact, he admires the smallish heavyweight.
"Okay, Harrison can be accused of conning people. But that shouldn't detract from David's achievement. He made mincemeat of Harrison. I want to be like David and be champion again," said Froch.
Froch meets Abraham in Helsinki in the final first round match of Showtime's Super Six. They'll battle for the now vacant WBC title. Regardless of the outcome both fighters are locked into the 2011 semifinals.
