With Cliff Lee angling for a seven-year contract and the New York Yankees being among the teams that could give it to him, a good question was asked among baseball people on Tuesday.
Might CC Sabathia opt out of his current seven-year, $161 million contract with the Yankees after the 2011 season and aim to land another big deal of his own?
After all, Sabathia's deal contains an escape clause after his third season in the Bronx and he'd be 31, one year younger than Lee's current age. With owners back to handing out Monopoly money, exercising the clause would be a good way for Sabathia to tack on another three or four years of guaranteed money somewhere.
But while the third baseman to his right pulled a similar maneuver with the Yankees after the 2007 season, Sabathia told George King of the New York Post that he still* has no intention of joining Alex Rodriguez or another teammate, A.J. Burnett, among those who have pushed the escape button on an existing deal.
*Sabathia had made similar denials during the 2010 season.
"It has no effect on me at all," Sabathia told The Post yesterday when asked if Lee's projected windfall could lead the Yankees' ace to opt out of the seven-year deal that has four years and $97 million remaining.
Sabathia said late last season he wasn't going to opt out. He has built a big house in Bergen County, which he lives in all year, and enjoys pitching for the Yankees.
Sabathia has repeatedly shown that he's a pretty regular guy and it's refreshing to see him act as if the remaining four years and $97 million on his contract are enough.
Because, let's face it, they really are more than he's going to need.
Back when Sabathia signed his deal in 2008, Yahoo! Sports reported that the escape clause was a sticking point because he wasn't sure his family would like New York after the Bay Area and then Cleveland. Now that he's acclimated himself in NYC and become a fan favorite, it's good to see that he intends to treat it as the emergency button he never needed to push.
