The Chrome Horn, episode 44: Dan Wetzel on Jimmie Johnson

It's no secret that there's a good segment of mainstream sports media that pays zero attention to NASCAR. That's fine; I'm not big on hockey, myself. (Sorry, Wysh.) But there are a select few national columnists who not only take an interest in NASCAR, they care enough to dig in deep, and in so doing bring a different angle than the embedded journalists. One such writer is our very own Dan Wetzel, national columnist and author of several fine books, including the new "Death to the BCS."

Wetz got the chance to spend several days in 2009 with Jimmie Johnson, and his account of Johnson's rise to title No. 4 was some of the best writing of that year. This season, he jumped in at Homestead and immediately shook up the proceedings. (He was the guy who asked Denny Hamlin how nervous he was at that pre-race press conference, giving Johnson and Kevin Harvick the opening to bust Hamlin's psyche wide open.) Anyway, we discussed that, along with other topics both inside and outside NASCAR. It's a great look at how the "outside" media perceives NASCAR's strengths and shortcomings.
