Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mike Brown has been suspended for three games and will forfeit $8,669.34 in salary for delivering a lateral hit to the head of Phoenix Coyotes player Ed Jovanovski in NHL game #651 last night, the National Hockey League announced today.
Brown's fine is based on his average annual salary and is calculated under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. The money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.
The incident occurred at 19:03 of the second period. No penalty was assessed on the play. Brown will miss games Saturday's game against Calgary, Jan. 19 at the New York Rangers and Jan. 20 against Anaheim. He will be eligible to return Jan. 22 against Washington.
"Lateral hit to the head" means this falls under the Rule 48 blindside hit ban, even though no penalty was called. Brown defended his actions last night to the Globe & Mail:
"I think the refs made a good call. They obviously didn't call it for a reason. I didn't think it was a bad hit. I was just going in with my shoulder like I normally would. I don't know what I hit on him. I think I just got him in a bad spot."
Leahy likened this play to the Nick Foligno hit on Patrick Dwyer earlier this season, which resulted in a fine. The Brown hit seemed more like a pick play rather than an attempt to get the puck.
This is another example of the learning curve under the new rule. This happens two years ago, there's likely no supplemental discipline. Today, it's three games in the press box.
