So how'd you like to collect a $70,000 check for a single golf swing? It could happen Thursday on the opening day of the PGA Tour season. How? Well, let's take half a step back.
First off, tropical paradises are apparently pretty dangerous. Earlier this week, Golf Digest noted that while in Grand Cayman last Saturday, Zach Johnson had (brace yourself for this one):
... tripped on a stone staircase and stubbed his toe, tearing off most of the nail. He said the toe has since become infected and is very sore...
ooooooOOOOOOWWWW. At last report, ZJ was still planning to play. But if he bails, he'll have major-winning company, as Geoff Ogilvy has hurt himself while swimming. The defending champ sliced open his hand on a coral reef, a cut that required 12 stitches. More gory analysis: "It was fairly deep, and when you’re on the reef, you’ve got to be careful with an infection," Paul Galli, Ogilvy's manager, told the AP. "They cleaned it out and put in some stitches."
Painful as both injuries are, here's something that could make both guys feel better. As Local Knowledge notes, all they have to do is tee off before withdrawing in order to collect last-place checks. And last year, the last-place finishers took home $70,500 in coin. Not bad work for what's potentially a single swing, yes?
As of Thursday morning, both players were still listed in the field. Johnson is scheduled to tee off at 5:20 p.m. ET, and Ogilvy will go off 40 minutes later. And both could be back in the clubhouse buying drinks for the house by 6:30. If, of course, they choose to take their cut and withdraw.
So ... would you do it?
[UPDATE: Per his Twitter feed, Ogilvy has formally withdrawn from the tournament. No word yet on whether he collected his check on the way out. Oh, and he showed a pic of his finger. Gross.]
