Matt Kuchar said it best earlier this week when he complained about the PGA Tour's decision to put the Heritage Classic two weeks after the Masters, as opposed to the week following the first major of the year, which was its rightful place for 17 years on the tour's schedule.
But things changed this year after tournament officials failed to secure a title sponsor, leading many to wonder if the tournament with the candy cane lighthouse and Calibogue Sound backdrop would cease to exist as a tournament.
So far, the good news is that everyone seems to be fighting for the same thing, which is to secure a title sponsor for at least the next couple of years.�Tournament officials have been pulling out all the stops, and as the Charlotte Observer's Ron Green Jr. hinted on Saturday, there's a rumor going around that the tournament could be making a big announcement during Sunday's final round.
One of the popular pieces of gossip going around Harbour Town this week says there will be an announcement Sunday about a title sponsor for the Heritage. Ask anyone officially involved with the tournament and the sponsorship hunt and they'll tell you they've heard the same thing - but that doesn't mean it's true.
Quite honestly, it doesn't matter at this point who the future sponsor is, just so long as they get somebody in place for next year, and get the Heritage back to its rightful spot the week following the Masters -- if for any other reason than that it makes sense from a logistical standpoint.
There are certain tournaments you just expect to see on the schedule each year, and the Heritage is definitely one of them. With a star-studded leaderboard and some potential on-course drama going into the final round, you can only hope it's enough to get someone to front the money that's currently needed to save one of the last tournaments with a classic layout on the PGA Tour.
