Thierry Henry breaks MLS goal drought, seems to care

Thierry Henry scored just his third MLS goal in 1219 minutes of league play and first since September 11 of last year against San Jose on Saturday. Sure, it was just the third goal in a 3-0 win and he did it in the 86th minute, but a goal is a goal and Henry finally got one after New York fans started to turn on him and question his commitment. And it seemed Henry heard their angry chants and verbal smacks because he celebrated rather aggressively right in front of them after heading in a cross from Luke Rodgers (who earlier scored his first two MLS goals).

Said Henry after the match (via MLSsoccer.com):

"It was more annoying than important, because it didn't really have an effect on the game but I tried everything I could do to score and I finally did," Henry said. "But the more important thing is that we worked hard."

Maybe this was the breakthrough that Henry and his hobo beard needed to finally start wowing people in MLS. Maybe by doing things like trying everything he could do to score, he'll get the more pessimistic segments of his team's fans back on his side. Or maybe he will go another few months before scoring again, have a book written about how he doesn't buy his teammates brunch and grow his beard down to his ankles. Who knows.

Anyway, pay close attention, Fernando Torres. There is hope. Perhaps one day soon you too will score a goal in MLS.
