While many of the top Americans are freezing their balatas off in Phoenix, there's quite the battle going on over in Qatar at the Commercialbank Qatar Masters. On the line? No less than the World No. 1 ranking!
OK, we've been over this before -- the Official World Golf Rankings are, at the moment, a bit of a goof, a statistical oddity only useful for when you're talking about the top position. But because of all the chaos in the post-Tiger Woods-dominance era, even that top position is now in play.
Lee Westwood captured the top ranking back around Halloween, and he's held that without much challenge from anyone, until now. Martin Kaymer has put on a charge, and if he manages to finish alone in second while Westwood finishes worse than 22nd, Kaymer takes over the top spot, along with all the attendant publicity and wonderful gift basket of fruits and cheeses.
So where do things stand now? As the second round winds to a close, Westwood is holding up his end of the deal -- or not, as the case may be -- and is expected to miss the cut. But Kaymer has had troubles of his own, and currently sits tied for 57th, 10 shots off the lead of Markus Brier.
So, yes, Westwood's hold on the top spot is likely safe for another week. But for how much longer? For how much longer?
