Yes, it's still February, but it's never too early to start talking Augusta. And let it be known that the first official story of the season concerns Phil Mickelson and food.
No, no, don't go with the easy jokes; this is a little better than that. As you probably know, the previous season's Masters winner gets to pick the menu for the Champions Dinner. (Click here for some selected offerings from previous years.)
Previously, Mickelson has served up barbecued ribs, but this year, he wanted to do something a little different. He sought to honor Seve Ballesteros, still recovering from a 2008 brain tumor, with a Spanish-themed dinner of paella or something similar. But apparently, Ballesteros is too ill to travel, so Mickelson will have to make other plans.
"I learned one thing over the years," Mickelson said in an interview. "Many of the past champions, they love beef and they love meat. And because of that, I want to honor the past champions at Augusta. I plan on having a trio of different meats, whether it be bison or venison or just filet. I was thinking about kind of honoring the guys with a bunch of different meats, as well as a lot of green vegetables."
Deee-licious. And for the record, Mickelson plans on trying that historic shot from the trees on 13 again ... though in practice, of course. He also practices the same putt that won the Masters for him in 2004, though hopefully not the mini-leap that went with it.
