All good things must come to an end. For Arnold Palmer, that meant bringing to a close one of the most meaningful and rewarding chapters of his life this week.
On Monday, Palmer piloted his Cessna Citation 10 for the last time, flying from Palm Springs to Orlando. It was an emotional flight for “The King,” who spent what seemed like his entire life jet-setting around the globe. Golf Digest was there to capture the moment, snapping some photos of Captain Palmer for the last time.
Palmer logged almost 20,000 hours in the cockpit, an astonishing number when you consider those hours equate to more than 833 days in the air. But for a guy who enjoyed traveling and seeing the world from the sky – in 1976, he set a round-the-world speed record that still stands – the figure doesn’t seem so crazy.
But don’t feel too bad for Arnie; he’s still going to be flying whenever he can. "I'll still be flying in my plane as much as always, just not in the cockpit," Palmer told the Local Knowledge blog. "Flying has been one of the great things in my life. It's taken me to the far corners of the world. I met thousands of people I otherwise wouldn't have met. And I even got to play a little golf along the way."
I’d imagine he’ll be doing it from the comfort of a bucket seat, drinking an Arnold Palmer and staring at the world below him.
