Good news for those with a list like that, because all three are in the top five at this week's Cadillac Championship. Mahan has been sneaking around the lead all week after opening with a tidy 64, but Johnson joined the fray after a Saturday 65 that has him two shots clear of the field, and in a position that most thought he'd be much earlier in the season.
It's an interesting dynamic near the top of the leaderboard this week, because a lot of the focus again has been on Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. While Luke Donald is searching for his second win in as many World Golf Championship events, and Johnson is trying to break through and continue his run at the best player under 30, Tiger and Phil news has stuffed our inbox. It really forces the question, "when is that going to stop?"
Tiger is 10 shots back, and Phil is four shots back of him, but the golf world still wants to see what they're doing, or how they're playing. I'm sure during the Sunday telecast, you'll get plenty of shots of Tiger in his Sunday red, even though he's far from a factor.
But golf could use a McIlroy win or a Johnson domination. It's good for the game. Anytime these studs can win or contend, it makes it a little easier to forget about Woods and Mickelson. They're always going to be the story to some, but the real story should be about who is near the top. This week, it's a pretty impressive list.
