While it's not the Tiger versus Phil battle we've all been secretly wishing for all these years, it's probably the next best thing. A verbal battle between swing instructors. Swing instructors, people!
OK, it doesn't seem that intriguing on the surface, but your interest might be piqued when you realize the instructors feuding are Hank Haney and Sean Foley, two guys who happen to share one player in common: Tiger Woods.
While Haney and Foley have never seen eye to eye on swing techniques and coaching Tiger Woods, they've managed to keep things professional.
Until now. Golf.com's recent Q&A with Foley touched on a number of hot button issues, including a question on some comments Haney made about his personal relationship with Woods. (Haney's quote: "I always felt like I knew Tiger from observing. I did not feel I knew him from knowing him.")
When Golf.com asked Foley if he felt the same way during his time working with Woods, he responded by stoking the fire and questioning Haney's techniques.
"Hank built most of his career around Tiger. I found most of that interview to be unprofessional. I don't understand how, if you don't get to know the person, how you can teach them," Foley told Golf.com. "There is the business aspect of it where you have to keep things separate from that standpoint, but if you're spending eight hours a day with this person you have to have some things in common. There was no way I was ever going to be able to stand on the range with anyone who was not kind to people or rude just to make my career better. I could care less about it."
Of course, Haney read the interview and decided to respond to the comments in kind ... via Twitter. "If you want to be entertained go to Golf.com and read Sean Foley's latest version of ripping Hank Haney, all I can say is wow," Haney said on his Twitter account.
Haney then started retweeting responses from some of his followers regarding Foley, some of which were downright funny: "That other guy should join the Miami Heat, they have won anything either, but can't shut up. Good one," he retweeted at one point.
The retweets, while not directly from Hank, were clearly a passive aggressive way of expressing his frustration with Foley's interview. The gloves have officially come off between the two instructors. With the Masters only a month away and the golf season in full swing, there's a good chance the war of words between these two won't be going away anytime soon.
